"I lift up my eyes to the mountains-
where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord
the Maker of heaven and earth."

You are the Sun and I, the Moon
Date
Written March 7, 2022

I wrote this 2022 poem for my sister, Adia's, 15th birthday. At first, I had no conceivable idea of what I wanted to say to her, but I knew I wanted it very personal and vulnerable. Thus, I started two or three different poems, but the words weren't flowing naturally. After much groaning and growling in frustration, I stabbed the tip of my pen to the paper and this stream of words began to pour forth from the depths of my heart. My darling sister and Sun, I love you. <3

~ You are the Sun and I, the Moon ~
Light.
O lovely, o pure and divine.
Pray, cast a reflection of thine onto mine.
For I am the Moon, and you are the Sun,
blackened I am without you, little one.
Yellow and golden, you blaze in the deep,
rousing dim twilights out of their sleep;
waking the heavens with your beautiful smile,
you give me a hope that it’s all worth the while.
Between us is silence, where there used to be notes
of melancholy music you and I both wrote.
In the chasm between us, the space holds no stars,
it’s black all around now that I’ve gone so far.
Memories fill me with sad tear-filled eyes,
how often I used to come visit your skies!
But a silence engulfed me, I withdrew from your gaze,
yet you still burned the brighter, undimmed in your blaze.
Now I ask thee again, to please share of your light,
cast flaming eyes on the dead of my night,
for we, you and I, oh the Sun and the Moon,
are sisters. Our hearts beat a similar tune.
I’m reaching for thee, with my hand open wide,
embrace me with all of your goodness inside.
Forgive me, I’ve long abandoned you, true,
and I’m sorry for all the times I have hurt you.
Let my tears mingle with thine in your pain,
kiss my sad brow when Despair starts to reign;
hold me so close in the blackness of night.
remember that you are my sweet little light.
I love you, I love you, my soul’s truest friend,
you are God’s peace when my mind’s close to dead;
thank you for being the light of my life,
I need you, my sister, in this world full of strife.
For the Moon and the Sun can’t survive alone, no,
they need one another in virtue to grow;
for what would I be, the Moon, without my Sun?
I would be nothing, my sweet little one.
But God has been gracious, He’s given me you,
for you are my sunshine when my skies are blue;
I swear to the heavens, and pledge to the stars:
Never forget how beloved you are.
